Why deteriorated pointing should not be ignored
Mortar joints protect the edges of the masonry and help prevent rainwater from entering the wall. Over time, exposure to wind, rain and repeated freezing and thawing can cause the pointing to crack, loosen or erode.
Once gaps develop, water can penetrate more easily, potentially leading to dampness, frost damage and deterioration of the surrounding stone or brickwork. Renewing damaged pointing early can help protect the masonry and prevent more extensive repairs later.
Chimney stacks are particularly exposed because they face the weather from every direction. Their pointing should therefore be checked regularly and repaired when deterioration becomes visible.

The timescale depends on the size and condition of the area, the preparation required, access arrangements and the weather.
Small, localised repairs may be completed within a day, while larger walls, elevations or chimney stacks can take several days or longer. We will provide an estimated timescale with your quotation.
Does the whole wall need doing, or just the bad patches?
Not always. If deterioration is confined to a small area, localised repairs may be sufficient.
Where the mortar has failed across much of the wall, more extensive repointing may provide a better and more consistent result.
We will assess the condition of the joints and clearly explain the extent of work recommended in your quotation.
